Puccini’s Tosca from Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa, opens worldwide on Sep. 14, 2010. The production stars real-life couple Daniela Dessi and Fabio Armiliato in the roles of Floria Tosca, the fiery soprano, and Mario Cavaradossi, the painter-slash-revolutionary.
Now here’s the whole story: I get to subtitle most of the operas here at Opera in Cinema. Some are more difficult than others – Verdi’s Falstaff was trouble, for instance, because of the complicated passages of polyphony wherein everybody’s singing different text. Subtitling Tosca was difficult for a completely different reason: I would get so sucked into the performance that I would forget what I was doing and just watch the opera, my jaw slack and my eyes bugging out (and my fingers not doing any subtitling). So, suffice to say, this production is a true tour-de-force all around. SEE IT, SEE IT, SEE IT! And I’m sorry if the subtitles are a little sloppy.
