Sona Jain (Writer/Director)
Born in New Delhi, living in New York, Sona has been
making movies since 1995. At 18, she was the youngest author of an
Economics text-book in India. She started in films as Assistant to
acclaimed Indian Director, Mahesh Bhatt on feature films and television.
Her first short film, “Hijra: The Outsiders” – a documentary on the
hermaphrodite community in Delhi – won her admission to the renowned
Masters Program in Filmmaking at New York University’s, Tisch School of
the Arts. For her following works, she was awarded the Graduate
Fellowship at New York University.
Her award-winning short, "Vasarma’s Lovers," has played
at numerous international film festivals and screenings, including the BBC
British Short Film Festival in London, the prestigious St. Petersburg
“Message to Man” festival in Russia and the Canadian International Film
Festival (where it was awarded the Judge’s Special Commendation).
Hypnotic Inc., a distribution company part owned by Universal Studios, is
distributing the film worldwide. "Vasarma’s Lovers" is scheduled to
premiere on US television on the Starz/Encore channel. It has also been
purchased for exhibition by Chrysler Films (featured amongst their Top 5
Film Picks on their online outlet), Movieola Cable Network (Canada) and
HBO (Latin American Division). "Vasarma’s Lovers" is due for a DVD
release alongside the hit indie feature, American Desi later this year.
"For Real" is her first feature film. |
