A Wonderful Night in Split (Ta Divna Splitska Noc)
Written and Directed by Arsen Anton Ostojic
In Croatian and English with English subtitles
Croatia, 2004, 100 minutes

A Wonderful Night in SplitA few hours before the new year in the city of Split, a widow makes love to her dead husband’s best friend. In the next room, her young son lies awake, listening to their conversation: the man won’t be staying, he has to take a bus to Munich, to deliver a package. Leaving the widow in tears, he disappears into the streets, passing a girl, a junkie who in her desperate search for a fix, makes her way to a local dealer and an unseemly proposition: a shot of heroin if she sleeps with an American sailor who is looking for a prostitute. The girl agrees and the dealer leaves the two alone as he heads off to meet a customer—the man who left the widow to make a delivery. Handing the man his package, the two part ways without realizing that in just a few moments, as a rock concert and fireworks ring in the new year, the lives of everyone they’ve met that night will intertwine and unravel, and their own lives will be changed, by of all things, an angel hovering over this wonderful night in Split.

"A Wonderful Night in Split is, in my opinion, the best domestic movie shot since Croatia became an independent country in the early 90s."
-Marko Njegic

“This creation should be watched and remembered. It is art in its highest form, bordering on genius."
-Zvonimir Berkovic, Jutarnji list

“This is a true gem of moviemaking, a perfectly orchestrated story concentrated on the fates of a number of protagonists..."
-Nenad Polimac, Globus

"Ostojic’s movie is superior in all respects – direction, screenplay, concept and technical workmanship. More importantly, this motion picture is also superior in frame of mind."
-Jurica Pavicic, Jutarnji list
