MARION THEATRE
The Marion Theatre
was built in 1940 by E.J. Sparks and
the project was overseen by Roy A.
Benjamin, Jacksonville architect,
who lived in Ocala, Florida as a
boy. The Magnolia site purchased for
the Movie Palace was one of the
historic corners of Ocala's business
district at the time. The Marion
Theatre is located in the heart of
Downtown Ocala and is a rare example
of a Streamlined Modern Art Deco
movie house.
In December 1986
the theatre was donated to the City
by James E. Kirk, Jr., former Ocala
Mayor, former president of the
Chamber of Commerce and owner of
WMOP. The City of Ocala votes in
December 2003 (5/5) to enter a
long-term lease with the Marion Film
& Visual Arts Foundation, Inc. to
restore the Marion Theatre to its
original intended purpose, a Movie
House.
January 2004
The
Marion Film & Visual Arts
Foundation, Inc. begins a $1 million
dollar fundraising campaign to fund
the restoration, as close to its
original state, including state of
the art equipment and seating. In
2006, with sponsorship dollars,
along with the help from Lee Farkas
and state grants, the MFVAF has
raised funds in the amount of $1.5
million dollars. A request for
proposals was submitted to find a
contractor for the project. Bids and
interest from several construction
companies are received.
August 2007

re-opening of the historic Marion
Theatre on August 11th, 2007.
