The Riviera
Theatre opened as the Twin Cities
Rivera Theatre in 1926 as a
vaudeville and silent movie house,
The movies were accompanied by the
now world famous Wurlitzer Pipe
Organ. Within three years after its
opening the theatre started to show
films with a sound-on-record system.
In 1930, under new
management, the theatre changed its
name to "Riviera" and converted to a
sound - on - film system which
necessitated changes in the
auditorium as well as the projection
booth. Film presentations gradually
replaced live performances over the
next two decades.
In the1950's the
Riviera joined the 3D film craze and
installed its first wide screen for
Cinemascope presentations. The
theatre has continued to show both
wide screen and flat formatted films
to the present day.
Today the Riviera
is equipped to show 16mm and 35mm
silent and sound films at their
proper speeds using a two projector
system and solid state sound.
Recently new amplifiers, speakers, a
new silver screen, and digital
projection equipment have been
added. These additions make the
Riviera a much sought after film
venue for new productions as well as
nostalgia and historic film
presentations. Such preservations as
a chandelier and a moving grand
drape add to the richness of the
theatre experience.
